Wes... mine has been mounted on the hood since 2002 or so...
never lost the antenna... yet

ask Chris Grant.. reception is phenominal :footy:
3db gain = 2x65W output at max
... dont think it amplifies reception though...

Hey Phil, web wheeling doesn't count buddy. You actually have to go out and hit the trails.

Phil's solution is the ideal solution.

But due to the conditions we drive in, hood mounted antennas are quite vunerable to branches braking them or whipping them back and smashing the windshield.

If mounted on the back, try to mount as high up as possible. also ensure you have a good ground. But also ensure the base is not vunerable to a branch sliding over your roof and snapping off the antenna.

ya that's why i thought off the tire carrier was ideal. I also heard they are not supposed to be mounted near other antenna's and I have one on each side up front already. I could have half the antenna over the roof line so its still high but wont break if it gets hit.

Mounting it on your tire carrier will work fine provided you add a ground strap from the carrier to the frame, and when I say carrier I mean the swing out part the antenna is on. That greasy bearing or bushing does not conduct worth a dam!

Your other option is to buy a Diamond K400 mount that swivels on 2 axis so you can mount your antenna on any body lip you can imagine, such as the rear tailgate as I did. But at $80 per mount their not cheap, but in my opinion their worth it. You'll never have to buy a different mount even if you change vehicles or decide to try you antenna in a different location. One of my K400's used to be on the trunk of my car.

Brian,

There are so many options it will make you mad, from drilling a hole to fancy mounts - basically you have to decide on what you want to spend..

You could spend the next two weeks straight reading up on the best mobile options to go with and how to mount them, then there are some articles that conflict with each other etc etc,, every single person has had different results and different opinions,,,

Then there's your antenna 1/2 wave 1/4 wave 5/8 WB NB location type of connections etc etc etc...

Personally you should look at what all the other HOT Jeeps have and base your decision on your own personal real world results...

This is what I came up with for Lisa's JK..a Comet 3 axis (PKG RS-730 MT NMO + CK-3M5 CABLE KIT) from http://www.hamradio.com/ and this way you can mount it almost anywhere if you don't get good results and use it on future vehicles also...

Now the Antenna (depending upon if you go with a dual band or single) Good Luck !!

OK i finally have a little time to put this in, so here is another question if i mount the antenna bracket on my spare tire carrier will that work?:

Brian, if you go with the NMO mount antenna you can get mounts that work with different material thicknesses.
The most common only works with sheet metal and will be hard to mount to your tire carrier. Check out the one on my tire carrier, drilled right through and mounted. You can get them, but you'll have to ask for it, or you'll get the standard one. Burnaby Radio has them in stock.

Alright finally got some time today and finished putting the radio in. went with the tire carrier for the antenna mount, ran a wire to the frame for ground. Could not find a ground strap though that's an easy upgrade. Are you guys using the real galvanized steel braided ground straps? If so where do you get them? My buddy just put one in also, tried to test it out but are finding our range was quite poor. I really have no idea how to use the radio yet but im hoping it was just a stupid error by one of us. Was able to tune in and listen to a repeater 145.150 i think it was. So i know it is working just have to figure it all out. Really wish the course was how to use these radios not just how they work. Oh well i will figure it out along the way!

Ground strap was just a small piece of copper wire and some ring terminals. drill, screw, done.

Tuning is more just cutting the antenna to the proper length. Should be instructions with it. for mine, I recall 36" was optimum for the band I use.
