September Long Weekend (Aug 30-Sept 2) - Tunkwa Lake/Lac du Bois

Post by Red Rock »

The September long weekend trip this year will be to the Tunkwa Lake and Lac du Bois area. We are NOT going to Farwell Canyon due to the landslide in that area.

Camping will be at Tunkwa Lake - https://bcparks.ca/tunkwa-park/
We hope to get one of the group sites but there are a large number of campsites available so there should not be problem with room. The only services at this campsite are pit toilets and hand pump water.

There are many trails in the Tunkwa vicinity. We also plan to take a trip down through Kamloops to the Lac du Bois off road park.

I hope to head up on Thursday night but failing that, Friday night.

Post up if you plan to attend.

We will be camped with family and friends at chimney lake rec site which is in the area. We hope to join the herd for some exploring on one of the days.

Huge landslide at farewell canyon. Glad we switched plans for Aug long weekend now we need to see if we can still visit farewell canyon in Sept long.

Chilcotin river completely blocked upstream and it may burst through the landslide within 48hours. All advised not to be near the river up or downstream in the area.

The water behind landslide in Farwell canyon has broken through and things are returning to a more normal status, however there are additional potential landslides in the immediate area and the Farwell bridge has not yet reopened. We should consider a different location for September.

We can talk about this at the August meeting but I am going to suggest that we do the Whipsaw trail instead, camping at the Granite Creek rec site.

I think this is a wise move. I'm sure government officials and First Nation leaders don't want a bunch of looky loos pokin there noses around there either.

We can't go wrong with a perennial favorite like Whipsaw, but, I thought there was nothin left of Granite Creek Campsite?

I was going to suggest Green Lake Prov Park - 70 Mile area. There are some snowmobile trails in the area too!

I thought we were gonna start a whole new thread for Tunkwa?

We have farewell Canyon comments mixed in with the Tunkwa comments. It's really confusing to read this thread now.
